Edna Karr 2025’s football team signs 15 players to D1 scholarships

Yesterday was a monumental day in Louisiana high school football history. 15 of Edna Karr’s 2026 graduating football players signed football scholarships to play at Division I (FBS and FCS) schools. 

In today’s world of college football and how teams stack themselves with transfer portal players from lower tier schools, often leaving HS students to fend for themselves at Group of 5, lower lever FCS, Division II, Division III, and even NAIA and NJCAA (JUCO) schools, what Karr accomplised is no small feat.

To my knowledge, there is no other school in Louisiana football history to accomplish such a feat. And it is not for nothing. The Cougars have not lost a football game since late in the 2023 post-season. They are the Louisiana defending Division I-Select state champions and are on track to be back-to-back reigning champions.

This year’s Karr team may very well go down as one of the best high school football teams in Louisiana history if they finish the course and win the Division-I select State Championship on December 13. 

It will mark the 2nd undefeated season in the row for the Cougars, competing in arguably the state’s toughest playoff bracket. Most would say they face the toughest regular season schedule as well, going through the gauntlet known as the ‘Catholic League’ (against the likes of St. Aug, John Curtis, Jesuit, Brother Martin, Rummel, Holy Cross and Warren Easton on a yearly basis.)

Leading the way for the team from the West Bank of New Orleans ranked ninth in the entire nation, is 5-star defensive tackle Richard Anderson (the #1 defensive tacke in the entire nation in the 2026 class) and 4-star safety Aiden Hall, both whom committed to and due to sign with LSU.

QB/ATH John Johnson surprised some when he flipped his commitment from Washington State to West Virginia on signing day. Two of his teammates (RB Tre Garrison and DB Torrence Sanders) decided to stay committed to the Washington State Cougars.

Two other notable signees included DB Hayward Howard, who signed with perennial power Texas Longhorns and fellow DB Maurice Williams Jr., who decided to sign the ink with the University of Colorado, coached by NFL Hall of Fame CB Deion Sanders.

Blake Baker set to become next Tulane coach

According to my sources, LSU defensive coordinator Blake Baker is set to become the next Tulane Green Wave head coach.

Baker has cemented himself as one of the best coordinators in all of college football and has recently interviewed for a few head coaching vacancies, including the head coaching gig for the Memphis Tigers.

Baker famously played for the Tulane Green Wave between 2000-2004 so he has ties to the university and the New Orleans area. So it wouldn’t be surprising to see him accept the Tulane job, as he wants to advance his coaching career past being a college coordinator, even if it is at a major Power 4 conference school like LSU (who recently hired a new coach.)

A deal may be announced beforehand, but I wouldn’t count on/expect one to be held before the Green Wave’s conference championship game against North Texas this Friday and/or if they win, before the conclusion of their playoff run. 2022-2023 NBA season awards

The NBA playoffs are in full swing, and that means we aren’t far away from the winners of each individual NBA annual awards being announced. Some may be pretty ob. Here is who I think is deserving of each major individual award and who should make the all-NBA teams. Quick note, to qualify for any major award, I used the same rule that the league uses, which is a player must player in at least 50 games to be eligible. That is why you MAY find a glaring omission or 2 (*cough* Kevin Durant *cough*). LeBron James point total vs. Minnesota Timberwolves

Tonight kicks off the annual NBA playoffs with a ‘play-in’ game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves and there is money to be made. I fully expect LeBron James to go off and have a big night against a weakened T’Wolves defense. NFL Honors predictions

The NFL Honors awards are tonight so I’m not gonna hold y’all. These are my predictions for each major category. 

Louisiana 2024 top-10 players

It’s no secret that the state of Louisiana consistently produces some of the best football players in the nation. Here is an early look at who I feel are the best 8 players in the upcoming cycle (2024). Keep in mind that it is still really early in the process and a lot can change between now & December/February 2024. Let me know what y’all think and/or who I may have to look out for.

10. Bobby Kennedy (St. Augustine HS/New Orleans)

                       Billy Embody/On3

The 6’4, lbs. ATH is sort of a ‘raw prospect’ at CB after switching over from wide receiver following his sophomore year. He is a physical DB who plays close to the line of scrimmage, which at his size usually intimidates whatever receiver he is covering. He has good hand placement to defend passes when they come his way and from what I’ve seen he also likes to make tackles, rarely letting ball carriers get by him, He has offers from Ole Miss, Tulane, Southeastern Louisiana and Alabama State.

 

9. Kavion Broussard (Zachary HS/Zachary)

The 6’6, 250 lbs. offensive tackle is another player on this list that is making a change from a different position, but has taken to it like a fish in water. He has very quick feet which helps him neutralize the speed of rushers coming off the edge on the QB’s blind side. He also has a long wingspan and isn’t afraid to get down & ‘dirty’ with the physical aspect of playing in the trenches. He does have a bit of a slender frame but has a lot of time to add weight to play at the next level. Broussard currently has offers from Florida State, Miami (FL), Mississippi State, TCU and Texas Tech.

8. De’Myrion Johnson (Westgate HS/New Iberia)

                           Rivals

The 6’3, 280 lbs. defensive lineman lives in opposing teams’ backfields. Johnson can play both the interior and on the end. Johnson is great at using his hands to shed would be blockers at line of scrimmage and causes havoc once he is in the backfield. He also has a high motor and does not give up on plays until the whistle blows. He currently holds offers from LSU, Alabama, Texas A&M, Oregon, Ole Miss, Miami (FL), Auburn, Nebraska and other schools.

7. Wallace Foster IV (Warren Easton HS/New Orleans)

                      Rivals

The only reason Foster isn’t ranked higher on this list is because he missed most of this past season because of a broken leg. The 5’10, 170 lbs. prospect is a lockdown corner who essentially eliminates half the field. Has elite coverage skills, great speed and is also very good at making tackles in the open field  on short passes to prevent long plays. Foster is currently committed to LSU, but also holds offers from Texas, Florida, Arkansas, Texas A&M, Tulane, Ole Miss and other schools.

6. Josh Jackson (St.Augustine HS/New Orleans) - 

                                           St. Augustine HS

The 6’3, 190 lbs. WR is a dynamic playmaker who has a knack for finding his way to the end zone on a regular basis. He has good speed for his frame, is excellent at getting separation from defenders, has great hands and is hard to tackle after he catches the ball. As of now, he has offers from Michigan, Ole Miss, Nebraska, Marshall, Louisiana-Monroe and Grambling State.

5. Wardell Mack (John Ehret HS/Marrero)

                            Rivals

The 6’1, 175 lbs. CB is very athletic and deceptively fast. Has great ball skills for a DB and can break on passes at the snap of a finger at any level of the field. This past season he played WR as well and created a lot a ‘highlight’ plays at that position as well & can take routine screen passes and turn them into touchdowns on a regular basis. He currently has offers from LSU, Alabama, Michigan State, Florida State, Texas, Nebraska and a host of other schools.

4. Ju’Juan Johnson (Lafayette Christian Academy/Lafayette)- 

                      Coach Fuse

The 5’11, 175 lbs. ATH is a playmaker. While he primarily lines up as a QB for Lafayette Christian, he projects to be a defensive back at the collegiate level. That being said, he makes phenomenal plays with the ball in his hands on offense and is very exciting. It’s like ‘must-see’ tv. He recently committed to the University of Colorado but also holds offers from LSU, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Penn State, Oklahoma as well as a host of other schools.

3. Kolaj Cobbins (Destrehan HS/Destrehan)

The 6’4, 205 lbs. edge rusher is a monster coming off the end for the Wildcats. His speed and knack for defending the outside running game make him one of the most sought after prospects in the entire country. As of now, he holds offers from LSU, Michigan, Alabama, Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Oregon, Colorado, Texas A&M, Tulane and others.

2. Tylen Singleton (Many HS/Many) - 

                        Rivals

Standing at 6’2, 200 lbs., Singleton is a safety with great range and coverage skills in the open field. Singleton is an hard hitting playmaker who embraces contact which is a huge plus if a defensive coordinator wants to line him up close to the line of scrimmage too offset opposing teams run game. Singleton holds offers from LSU, Texas A&M, Notre Dame, Southern California, Michigan, Florida State among others.

1. Trey’Dez Green (East Feliciana HS/Jackson)

The 6’7, 230 lbs. TE from East Feliciana is the best player in the ‘Pelican State’ so far in this cycle. He is a legit dual-sport athlete that holds offers in football and basketball and I wouldn’t be surprised if playing both sports at the next level plays a factor in his college decision. On the gridiron, he holds offers from LSU, Alabama, Miami (FL), Michigan State, Colorado among others.

Ranking LSU #7

Over the years, there have been some great players to come through LSU that have dawned the #7. Today, I decided to rank those players. Of course, I didnt rank every single player who ever dawned the number, but I did start at 2005. Let me know what y’all think.

Travis Hunter Jackson State highlights

This morning, I decided to make a highlight/tribute video for Travis Hunter’s time @ Jackson State University. For those who don’t know, Hunter was the consensus #1 overall recruit in the entire country (regardless of position) for the class of 2022 cycle and he shocked the world when he decided to attend Jackson State University instead of prominent PWIs with storied football histories. We all know the struggles and hardships HBCUs face on a yearly basis so the fact he decided to bring his talent and everything else that comes with it to this level is much appreciated. Go be great in Boulder Travis. Also, s/o to the Jackson State band for the music soundtrack.

Breaking: Aaron Anderson enters the transfer portal

I have just learned that University of Alabama WR Aaron Anderson has entered the NCAA transfer portal.

This comes as a bit of a surprise as it was expected that Anderson figured to be a prominent figure in the Crimson Tide’s offense going forward. He showed a lot of promise during spring and fall practices leading into the 2022 season before he was ultimately sidelined by an injury which limited his playing time. As for the schools I personally think have a good chance to land his services, I think:

• LSU - is the presumptive favorite going in to land ‘Deuce’s services. It is right up the road from his hometown of New Orleans and has always been his ‘dream school.’ The only reason he decommited from LSU in the first place was because of Ed Orgeron’s firing back during the course of the 2021 season.

• Florida State - the Seminoles had a ‘bounce back’ year and figure to be in the mix nationally. Adding a playmaker like Anderson will only help FSU. Add in the fact that former HS teammate Jamie Vance just earned all-conference honors in the ACC, fellow former Karr WR Destyn ‘Fatt’ Hill is expected to enroll in May (according to ON3’s Sam Speigleman) and the recruiting coordinator is fellow New Orleans native Dave Johnson (who loves to recruit Louisiana talent), and I would think the Noles have a good chance. 

• Southern California - USC did offer Anderson coming out of HS. Catching passes from a returning Heisman Trophy winning QB in a pass happy offense that likes to get speedy receivers the ball in space doesn’t seem all that bad either.

• Colorado - with Deion Sanders shifting from Jackson State to Colorado and the transfer portal being on fire and him claiming that he wants ‘dawgs’, Anderson definitely fits that mold. Coach Prime has made it clear that he wants to revamp the entire roster and what better way than to add a former 5-star recruit into the fold via the transfer portal. 

It will be interesting to see where the former Edna Karr prospect lands next. Stay tuned to SportsTalkQue for the latest on this developing story.

2022 College Football Awards predictions

Tonight is the annual College Football Awards Show presented by Home Depot. Here is my list of predicted winners for the major categories.

Ray Guy Award (Outstanding punter)

Predicted winner: Bryce Baringer, Michigan State 

            Nick King/Lansing State Journal

Baringer will win this award. He averaged 49 yards per punt this season. A tremendous field flipper that consistently put the Spartan defense in position to thrive.

Lou Groza Outstanding Place- Kicker Award (Outstanding kicker)

Predicted winner: Joshua Karty, Stanford

I have Joshua Karty from Stanford winning this award. He was perfect on FG attempts this season, including making a 61-yarder. He was also voted the team’s MVP.

Chuck Bednarik Award (Defensive Player of the Year)

Predicted winner: Will Anderson, Alabama

The EDGE rusher from Alabama finished the season with 51 tackles (17 of them being for a loss) and 10 sacks. It wasn’t as good as his output from the 2021 season, but he was still very productive for the Crimson Tide.

Paycom Jim Thorpe Award (Outstanding Defensive Back)

Predicted winner: Clark Phillips III, Utah

In a somewhat close race, Clark Phillips should hoist the hardware as the nation’s best DB. He finished the season with 6 interceptions for the Utes, including 2 he returned for touchdowns. If that weren’t enough to convince you he should win this award, he held 2021 Biletnokoff winner Jordan Addison ‘in check’ in the PAC-12 championship game last weekend.

John Mackey Award (Outstanding Tight End)

Predicted winner: Brock Bowers, Georgia

In a somewhat surprising move, I have Bowers winning this award over Notre Dame TE Michael Mayer. Yes, Mayer does have better stats and everyone knows he is the main reason Notre Dame’s offense was anywhere near productive this season, but I feel like Bowers was just as important to the Dawgs’ offense and was more impactful at the position playing tougher defenses. This honestly could go either way, but give me Bowers.

Doak Walker Award (Premire Running Back)

Predicted winner: Bijan Robinson, Texas

This will be a very close race, had it not been for being injured in the second to last game of the season, I think Michigan’s Blake Corum would have won this award. Despite missing essentially what is the last two games of the season, he still might possibly win it. All that being said, I think Texas’ Bijan Robinson pulled away with impressive showings at the end of the year to edge out the win in a very tight race. Illinois’ Chase Brown deserves some recognition as well. This is one category where I feel like all 3 finalists have a strong argument to claim this award.

Biletnokoff Award (Outstanding Receiver)

Predicted winner: Marvin Harrison, Jr. Ohio State

Anyone who has watched the Buckeyes play this season knows that Harrison Jr. is leagues ahead of any other receiver this season. He finished this campaign with 1,157 yards and 12 TD receptions. What is more impressive than that is some of the highlight reel plays he made. Harrison isn’t just the namesake of  his NFL HOFer dad, but he’s just as good (if not better) than his dad @ this level.

Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award (Best Quarterback)

Predicted winner: Caleb Williams, Southern California

In his first year as a full time starter at a new school, Williams brought the Trojans back to national relevancy for the first time in almost 2 decades. He finished the year with 4,075 passing yards and 37 TDs through the air with only 4 interceptions. When he wasn’t able to make things happen through the air but his team still needed big plays to move the chains…

Maxwell Award (Player of the Year)

Predicted winner: Caleb Williams, Southern California

…Williams delivered in that regard as well. While his rushing stats may not jump out at you, his ability to make plays with his feet cannot be underestimated. In addition to his 37 passing TDs, he was also able to get into the end zone on the ground 10 times, including a 3 rushing TD game vs. Notre Dame in the final week of the regular season. I expect Williams to clean up tonight and to win the Heisman Trophy on Saturday.
